Furler and Furling lines.

Furler and Furling lines

In 2024/2025 the genoa furler was dissambled, its bearings replaced, and its control line blocks  blocks upgraded.

As of March 2025 The lead blocks for the genoa and Staysail are now Garhauer SB-25s and the stanchion blocks are now all Selden 538-210-01. Uniform appearance, and compact, well-engineered stainless steel hardware.   All business!

Prior Post

Evolution was clearly at play here.   The Genoa appears to have been set on a Profurl unit from the factory, while the staysail was likely converted to furling later.  The continuous-line code zero was a relatively recent addition.  The setup for each is described below.
There are four stanchions aft of the bow pulpit, (S1-S4) then the entry gate with its own four posts, (G1-G4)  then one final  stanchion (S5) prior to the pushpit.   Roller furling lines run in various ways along these stanchions, then are led via a snatch block mounted on the mooring cleat to a foot block/jammer mounted on a low pedestal at aft end of each side of the cockpit coaming.
The hardware varies in quality and condition and, the snatch block on the dock cleat seems like an inferior approach.   The tropical sun had been unkind to the plastic hardware.

Once the boat is rigged, I can determine what to do with snatch blocks at the cockpit end.   Perhaps a ratchet block soft shackled to the toerail, just forward of the present location?   Similarly, the staysail furling line may benefit from some thought.   It is likely an obstruction on the foredeck, as the drum is high (why?) and its line appears to lead well aft.

Genoa

The genoa furler line is found on the port side and has its Spinlock SPWL2 lead block on the pulpit base.    Simple fair leads  are present on S2, S3, S4. one on the G3 (first post of aft gate) with another SPLW2 on S5. .  Line then goes via Barton snatch block on cleat, and to Spinlock B50X jammer foot block..
  • One Spinlick SPWL2 lead block on pulpit.
  • 5 Fairleads on 2,3,4 and G3
  • one SPWL2 on 5
  • one Barton snatch block on cleat
  • one spinlock jammer block on pedestal.. p/n B50X

Staysail

The staysail furler line is found on the starboard side and has its lead block on S1, with good quality SS Selden 538-210-01 stanchion blocks on S2,S3, S4 and G4.  Nothing on S5, however one block may have been removed. Arragement is otherwise per the genoa.   .
  • 1ea Spinlock SPWL2 on 1
  • 4 Selden Stainless stanchion blocks on 2,3,4, G4
  • one barton snatch block on cleat
  • one 3” (75mm) harken ESP footblock with lock off on pedestal.

Code Zero

The code zero and its continuous-line furling runs along starboard side in Selden double fair leads located on stanchions 1, 2, 4, and the aft post of the aft gate.   It is unclear how the line is secured near the cockpit,  however it may simply be to a docking cleat. (there are three large ones on the starboard side)    I am not sure if the lead from the furler to the first fairlead is fair, especially now that the bowsprit arrangmenent has changed.

Comments and next steps

Running the furling lines outside the stanchions offers little advange especially given the number of potential contact points against a convex curve.

Intention is to replace the genoa and staysail lead blocks with Garhauer SB-25, and replace the 5 genoa fairleads with stailness steel bearing blocks similar to those on the staysail, Selden 538-210-01 or Schaefer 300-34.

Prop is RH rotation.
