Sept 2024 update
Sakura's bottom had a build up of several systems of bottom paint, capped with a thick rubbery tar-like substance. I had received and acceepted a quote from the yard for a new bottom, (sand to primer and apply new antifouling) estimated at 25 hours of labour. Yard management changed before the work commenced and they would not honour the quote. Bad business but perhaps astute - the rubber coating immediately clogged any normal abrasive medium. Sandblasting was briefly investigated and in the end, I spent an unplanned 20 hours myself, employing various means to remove this stuff. This left a very hard blue material ("probably toxic and illegal now") over the base primer with some areas where a red material had been used, presumably for touch ups.
At this point the yard took over and the bottom was sanded to original primer, over which 2 coats of interprotect 200e were applied to above the bootstripe, which was sanded to be free from corrosion and will also be repainted prior to launch. It cost more than the original quote, and this does not include antifouling...
Day 1, below. No coveralls. (Day 2... tyvek coveralls)
Prior Post
ugh.
Have been dreading this part of the refit.
primocon and seajet 117 were recommended as brushable primers.
I bought a gallon each of Primocon and Pettit EZ-poxy
Visited Atlas tools today and apparently this sander is the way to go.
Under construction
JJ recommends SeaJet 017 or Primocon primer, Awlgrip with H3002 brushing converter for the hull.
Dealing with the failing paint will be the biggest job of all. I know little about this subject.
