Fishing Gear

Done!

Well… one smaller spinning reel to load.  Then done.  all reels serviced, the Senators all have upgraded drags,  are working perfectly and are loaded with 50-100lb braid.

The spinning reels are big surfcasting beasts, they make the 6/O senator look small.

Update

I did some homework found that parts are NLA for the 349, and that the 114 is often viewed as a bit cumbersome due to its size and weight.   Also, the 49, 112H, and 113H are good reels and have several parts in common.      I'll service all of them but replace bearings and drag washers in the latter 3.

The 49 has a lower retrieve ratio, so more torque but slower retrieve.   The higher speed versions are viewed as being more useful in a variety of circumstances.

Looks as though the same 50lb line would be appropriate for all 3, as along with the rods I purchased, these would be considered workhorse "50lb rigs".  Further learnings also indicate that the 114H could be mounted at the stern with a line (and a shock absorbing snubber) trolled directly, without a rod.     Further, that one of the reels could be outfitted with monel wire line for deep trolling/bottom fishing.     The subject is quite a rabbit hole.....

So, the 49, 112H, 113h will get 50lb braid with monofilament leaders.   The others will be set aside for now.   There is a hand reel and flying gaff and small gaff aboard, along with a roll of 80lb braid, and a handful of lures and swivels.

Found Penn Reel drawings and ordered parts here.

Ordered a very comprehensive book on the subject of fishing from a cruising boat:

Cruisers Handbook of Fishing
by Scott Bannerot (Author), Wendy Bannerot (Author)

This book is packed with great information, and with a couple of pages that discuss

Original post

Refit task #388 (of  7291) is to have fishing gear aboard Sakura.   The intended use is trolling for extended periods of time and possibly bottom fishing.   This is solely for dining, not for sport.   Gear should be so simple and rugged that it can be taken for granted rather than fussed with and fetishized, and should be sufficiently inexpensive that when it is lost or (god forbid...) stolen, there is no regret.

I have zero practical experience in offshore fishing, having only been a charter guest, and long ago at that. My initial learnings suggested that a large, simple reel with significant line capacity mated with a stout roller-guide trolling rod was the best option.
So, I overpaid slightly for a couple of used Penn reels and two stout 6'6" single-piece trolling rods with roller guides. The reels are lovely examples of timeless, classic industrial design. They must have told their friends because I now have a third rod and five classic Penn reels that I believe are suitable for offshore use. These are:
  • Penn Mariner #49
  • Penn Master Mariner #349
  • Penn Special Senator #112H#113H#114H
All are in working order, but I would like to ensure they are in perfect working order, and 100% reliable.
What parts/service are recommended?
I really only need two. Which two?
What type/size of line should I use?
What special wrenches, Penn-specific tools, or spare parts do I need?

Notes

113h are both older models, one has a tired wobbly clicker other needs to be checked for drag operation and for fibre washer between main gear and anti-reverse pawl

114h could use a new post or two, and one inside ring

Other 114 h (reserved for parts) is an older model with externally accessible drag.

Fitted Cutting boards

Will laminate a 36"X15"maple blank to create a  two cutting boards in the galley:    a  drop-in cutting board for the larger sink ...
